Project manager gets three year jail term and a hefty fine..still you call professional ethics as theory???
In a recent verdict, the court of Oman have imposed hefty penalties including decades of jail terms for the stakeholders involved in trying to influence the PDO officials to blacklist their competitors, so that they could make a re-entry into that account. Trying to influence the decision makers by offering them money and other goodies is not uncommon, but it is illegal. This case is a good example of professional ethics and social responsibility of the project managers, and for stakeholder management. When we do business in a country, we are supposed to abide by the law of the country. This is not the only case of it's kind. It got my attention, because Indians are involved in it. I am not happy about this incident, and at the same time I am curious to know the proceedings. This could be an eye opener for everyone associated with global project management. During my project management workshops, when I explain the professional ethics and social responsibility of project managers, majority of the participants get cynical about it and they tend to term it as theory. Like the contract has value when things start going wrong, the professional ethics will safeguard you when the project is in troubled waters.
